Bike Check: Christian DiCenso's 1991 Schwinn Sierra MOS

From eBay gamble to handbuilt perfection.

From eBay gamble to handbuilt perfection.

Christian approaches bike engineering with scientific precision combined with genuine riding passion. His project originated in January 2019 with a bare 1991 Schwinn Sierra MOS frame discovered on eBay. The frame represented quality chromoly construction from an era when Schwinn maintained high engineering standards — featuring rugged construction, thoughtful geometry, and authentic early-'90s character intact.

Donor components originated from his proven 1988 Schwinn Sierra, a machine he understood thoroughly. By May, the transplant achieved completion, rolling on handbuilt Sun Ringle Rhyno Lite wheels. The 32-hole rims received Sapim Race double-butted spokes laced to Shimano LX hubs — the type of wheelset engineers endure thousands of miles without truing concern.

The original Schwinn MOS fork paired with Deore DX 1 1/8" threaded headset maintains classic, tight steering geometry. The cockpit combines a Race Face Respond 760mm bar with a quill adapter (converting 25.4 to 28.6mm), permitting modern stem integration without sacrificing the retro fork's aesthetic integrity. Modern drivetrain duties fall to complete SRAM NX 1x11 configuration — featuring crisp shifting and a PG-1130 11-42T cassette supporting wall climbs or extended spinning. Race Face Evolve crank management pairs with solid external bottom bracket construction prioritizing stiffness and reliability.

Stopping power derives from Avid Single Digit 7 V-brake configuration paired with Speed Dial 7 levers, dialed with Kool Stop Tectonic pads. This rim-brake setup demonstrates that correctly engineered stopping systems remain entirely adequate for modern riding demands. Classic Selle Italia Turbo saddle positioning on an Origin 8 post maintains comfort without abandoning vintage aesthetic sensibility.

CST Camber tires represent deliberate selection — a tire managing loose dirt traction while maintaining smooth pavement rolling, equally competent on trails, towpaths, or casual urban transport. Notably, in 2024, this bike carried him to victory at the Voodoo Race Half-a-Toona, confirming its race-winning credentials.

This bike functions as a meticulously curated, battle-ready machine, not a museum display. Every decision — from spoke selection to quill adapter incorporation — serves genuine purpose. It represents engineering integrity: accomplishing the task correctly, even requiring thirty years and multiple donor machines to achieve perfection.
